Your data: export and print

Take a note, or your whole library, out of NotaBene as Markdown or PDF, or print it.

Export a note

  1. Open the note.
  2. Choose File ▸ Export Note, or Export… in the note's menu.
  3. Choose the format.
  • Markdown opens a save panel; choose where the file goes.
  • PDF opens the print panel, with copies, pages, orientation, scale and a preview. Choose PDF ▾ ▸ Save as PDF at the bottom.
  1. Open the note.
  2. In the note's menu, tap Share….
  3. Choose Markdown or PDF. The share sheet opens; tap Save to Files to keep the file, or send it on.

The file is named after the note.

What a Markdown file holds

A note goes out as the note it is: headings as #, a checklist as - [ ] and - [x] with its ticks, a table as a Markdown table, a callout as > [!tip] and a quote as >. Obsidian and other Markdown apps read these back as the same blocks.

What a PDF holds

The PDF is the note laid out on a page, with its pictures in it; a picture wider than the column is scaled to fit. Every other attachment — a PDF, a Word file, a spreadsheet, a zip — appears as its name on a row of its own. The page has white paper and dark text whatever the app looks like, with highlights and code in their colors.

Click or tap the printer in the note's bar, or press ⌘P. The system's print panel opens with the same page an exported PDF has. What you typed a second ago is on it.

Or choose File ▸ Print Note…. At the window's default width, the printer button is folded into » together with Info.

Export the whole library

Open Settings ▸ Import & Export ▸ Export Library.

Every note is written as a Markdown file, Notebook / Note.md, with an attachments folder beside the notes. At the top of each file are its title, notebook, tags and dates, in the form Obsidian and other Markdown apps read.

The export goes into a folder you choose — as does exporting a notebook or several selected notes. If that folder already holds a folder of the same name, the export goes beside it as Name 2; nothing already there is replaced.

Note: NotaBene does not export to Evernote's .enex format. Your library goes out in a form any Markdown app can read.
