Headings and the outline
Give a note structure with headings, fold the sections you are not working on, and see the whole note in its outline.
Make a heading
There are five levels of heading.
- Open the Aa menu and choose Heading 1 to Heading 5. The menu ticks the style the cursor is in, so you can also see what a line already is.
- Or type
#at the start of a line for Heading 1,##for Heading 2, and so on up to#####. - Or type
/and choose a heading from the menu.
To make a heading ordinary text again, use Turn Into ▸ Body Text in the block's menu (see Move and select blocks). Right after you make a heading, ⌘Z takes it back.
Each heading level has its own color. Choose the colors in Settings ▸ Appearance.
Fold a section
Click or tap the chevron beside a heading to fold the section under it out of sight. Click or tap it again to unfold the section.
The chevron is the fold arrow in the margin to the left of the heading.
The chevrons are in the left margin of the note.
See the outline
The floating outline button shows an outline of the note: its headings and, to begin with, its blocks such as callouts. For a note with a callout on every other line, Settings ▸ Editor ▸ Note outline leaves the blocks out and lists only the headings.
The note's Info panel has the outline too, at the top, as a list you can read whole: click a heading to go to it.
The outline's bars sit at the right-hand edge of the note. While a block's grip is showing, they step aside, and they come back when you stop writing.
