The Trash, and what asks first

Get a deleted note back from the Trash, and know what NotaBene asks before anything of yours is deleted.

The Trash

A note you delete goes to Trash in the sidebar. It keeps everything — its text, attachments and all — until the Trash is emptied. To empty it, right-click Trash in the sidebar (on iPhone and iPad, touch and hold it) and choose Empty Trash…; it asks first.

In the Trash, a note can only be restored or deleted permanently:

On iPhone and iPad, these two are what a swipe on a note in the Trash shows.

When you delete the note you are reading, the note under it in the list takes its place and opens — or the one above it, if the deleted note was the last. The list stays where it was rather than jumping back to the top.

Delete with the keyboard

⌘⌫ acts on what is picked out in the list:

  • With several notes selected, it asks the same question as the bin at the foot of the list — Move 3 notes to Trash? — and acts on those notes. In the Trash it asks Delete 3 notes permanently?
  • With nothing selected, it acts on the open note. In the Trash, that note is deleted for good once you confirm.

The menu item says which it will do: Move to Trash in a notebook, Delete Permanently in the Trash.

What asks first

Everything that deletes something of yours is red, has a bin on it, and asks before it goes — in a menu, in a swipe, or as a button in a form or on a page. The question says what will go and, where it matters, what will stay — for example, that the notes a saved search finds are not deleted, or that an event is deleted from the Calendar app as well.

That covers:

Regenerate Transcript asks too when a recording already has a transcript, because the new one replaces it.

Small edits you can simply undo don't ask: taking a tag off a note, a shortcut out of Shortcuts or a notebook out of a stack, removing a row or column from a table, clearing a task's due date, or removing one mark from a picture or a PDF.
