Connect Claude
Connect Claude to NotaBene on your Mac, so you can ask it about your notes — and, if you let it, have it do work in them — in the Claude app or in Claude Code.
NotaBene does not call an AI and costs you nothing extra: Claude runs under your own Claude plan and asks NotaBene what it needs. NotaBene answers and does the work itself, in the background.
Turn it on
- Choose NotaBene ▸ Settings… and select Claude.
- Turn on Let Claude read your notes.
It is off until you turn it on. With only this switch on, Claude can read and nothing more: it cannot change, add or delete anything. To let it do work in your notes, see Let Claude make changes.
Connect the Claude app
- In Settings ▸ Claude, under Connect Claude, click Add to Claude….
- The Claude app opens with NotaBene as an extension. Click Install.
Then ask Claude about your notes — for example, What did I write about the venue contract?
If the Claude app is not on your Mac, the button is a link to get it.
Connect Claude Code
In Settings ▸ Claude, open Claude Code, or connecting by hand, click Copy next to the claude mcp add command, paste it into Terminal and press Return. You only do this once.
Choose what Claude sees
Under Notebooks Claude Can See, turn off a notebook to hide it from Claude. Claude then finds nothing in it: not its notes, not their tasks, not links to them. If Claude asks for one of its notes, NotaBene answers as if the note did not exist.
See what Claude asked
Recent Requests lists the last 50 things Claude asked since NotaBene was opened, newest first, with the note or the search each was about. A request NotaBene refused is shown in grey.
When NotaBene is closed
If NotaBene is closed when Claude asks, it opens in the background — nothing comes to the front. If you turn Let Claude read your notes off, Claude is told that NotaBene is not answering.
> [!note] > NotaBene tells Claude that the text of your notes, mail and PDFs is your data, never instructions to follow.
Claude connects to NotaBene on a Mac, not on iPhone or iPad.
