Take the tour and get help
Take a short tour of NotaBene, open this guide, and find out which version you are running.
The welcome tour
The first time you open NotaBene, a tour of seven screens shows you around: what NotaBene is, the editor, notebooks and tags, search, saving from anywhere, your other devices, and the settings.
- Continue moves to the next screen; the dots show how far along you are.
- Skip is on every screen but the last, whose button ends the tour.
- On the last screen you can choose the app's language, and the tour changes to it as you watch.
You can also swipe from screen to screen.
The arrow keys move between screens, Return continues and Escape leaves.
Once you skip or finish the tour, it does not come back by itself. It never asks you for an account or for a permission: the features that need the camera, your calendar or notifications are named on the way, and the system asks for permission the first time you use one of them.
To take the tour again, open Settings ▸ Help.
Or choose Help ▸ Welcome to NotaBene.
With a keyboard attached, it is also in the Help menu: Help ▸ Welcome to NotaBene.
The NotaBene User Guide
This guide is part of the app, so it works offline. It is also on the beta site, at notabene.zavrel.net/guide, for reading on any device.
Choose Help ▸ NotaBene Help or press ⌘?. The guide opens in a window of its own, NotaBene User Guide, so you can keep it beside the note it explains. It is also in Settings ▸ Help ▸ User Guide.
You can also type a word into the search field at the top of the Help menu: the guide's topics are listed under Help Topics, and choosing one opens the guide on it.
Open Settings ▸ Help ▸ User Guide. The guide fills the screen; tap Done to go back.
Open Settings ▸ Help ▸ User Guide. The guide opens inside Settings; tap ‹ Settings to go back.
Each section of Settings has a ? that opens the page of this guide about what it sets — at the bottom right of the section on the Mac, in the bar at the top on the iPhone and iPad. Learn More on an empty Mail list opens the page on connecting a mailbox.
The contents are beside the page: the chapters with their topics, and the page you are reading selected.
The contents are behind Contents at the bottom of the screen.
- ‹ and › go back and forward through the pages you have read (on the Mac, also ⌘[ and ⌘]).
- The search field finds a topic by its words; topics with the word in their title come first.
- Where a step differs between devices, a topic says it for yours. The Mac · iPad · iPhone switch at the top of the topic shows the others.
- What's New lists what changed in each release.
The guide follows the app's language. A page that is not yet translated into Czech shows in English.
Which version you are running
The version and build number are at the bottom of Settings and in Settings ▸ Help, under the app's icon — for example Version 1.0 (607). You can select the text and copy it into a problem report. A development build adds a short code after the build number.
In the Settings window the version is at the foot of the sidebar. It is also in NotaBene ▸ About NotaBene.
In Settings the version is under the list of sections.
On the Apple Watch, the same numbers are at the bottom of the app's front screen, under the lists.
Which build the icon shows
During the beta, the app's icon tells builds apart: an orange BETA ribbon on a build from TestFlight, a purple DEV ribbon on a development build installed from a Mac, and the plain icon on a release. On the Apple Watch, whose icon is a circle, a ring in the same color takes the place of the ribbon.
