Label notes across notebooks with tags, and find everything with a tag in one place.
A note lives in one notebook but can carry any number of tags. A tag is shown as a blue chip wherever it appears.
See your tags
Tags in the sidebar lists every tag in your library — including tags no note uses yet, so you can set up the tags you want before you need them. The number beside a tag is how many notes carry it. Click or tap a tag to see its notes.
Click the Tags heading in the sidebar to open the table of all your tags.
Tag a note
The tag field says Add tag… until you type in it. Choose a tag from the list — type a few letters to narrow it — or choose New Tag… to make one.
To tag several notes at once, select them and use the bar at the foot of the list. See The note list: pin, sort, select.
Taking a tag off a note doesn't ask first; you can undo it. Deleting a tag from your library does ask first.
Rename or merge tags
Rename a tag and every note that carries it shows the new name. If you rename a tag to the name of another tag, the two are merged into one: a note that carried both ends up with that tag once, not twice. If both tags were in your Shortcuts, their two shortcuts become one.
A tag name pasted with a line break in it becomes a single line.
Find notes by tag
In the search field, type tag: and the tag's name — for example tag:work. Put a minus in front to leave a tag out: -tag:done. See Search.
